After the end of maintenance and support of the SAP OEM Job Scheduler, the company was forced to evaluate alternative job control tools.

Challenges and requirements before the introduction of BatchMan

Prior to the implementation of BatchMan, Rotkäppchen-Mumm used the standard tools and batch monitoring solution from SAP for background processing. As support for the SAP OEM solution expired and the increasing complexity and new requirements exceeded the capacity of these tools, Rotkäppchen-Mumm was faced with the challenge of a system migration. This necessitated an in-depth reassessment and adaptation of the existing job control tools.

Faced with this situation, the company began to look for alternative solutions and carried out several presentations and demos of different tools. The aim was to find a powerful and flexible Job Scheduling / Workload Automation tool that would meet the increased requirements.

Decision for BatchMan and implementation

The decision in favor of BatchMan was made after a good presentation and live demo of the tool, which resulted in a proof of concept (PoC). Only a short period of time passed between receiving the offer and implementing the SAP add-on for the PoC. The tool was implemented in the system using transport requests and could be integrated directly into the SAP system with minimal customization effort by a specialized expert from HONICO. Following the successful implementation of the tool, the SAP Basis employees at Rotkäppchen-Mumm were able to set up the first jobs together with the HONICO specialists. All the functionalities of BatchMan, such as chains, alerting, scheduling and other aspects of the system, were presented. The smooth integration and support from HONICO were crucial to the success of the project.

Increased efficiency and improved workflows through workload automation with BatchMan

The current status quo shows clear advantages over the previous target status. During the migration, it turned out that an existing functionality of the previous SAP OEM solution did not work one-to-one in BatchMan. However, HONICO‘s support responded within less than 24 hours and provided a solution in the form of a transport request. This fast and efficient support during the PoC strengthened the preference for BatchMan.

The tool met all the requirements for a job scheduling solution. For example, e-mail notifications can be set up if a run is aborted or times out without additional development effort. The connection of a test environment is easily possible and the calendar planning offers extended options. The user-friendly and familiar user interface (GUI) rounds off the benefits. BatchMan has therefore not only increased efficiency, but also improved the flexibility and reliability of background processing.
